In a move that’s caught attention nationwide, the Centre has handed MPs a generous pay bump, boosting their salaries by ₹24,000 to ₹1.24 lakh. Coupled with enhanced pensions and dearness allowances, this unexpected windfall has lawmakers counting more than just their votes.

Big Bonanza for MPs
The three elements given to present and former MPs were last revised in April 2018. The increase in salary and pension is expected to have an impact on the exchequer, as there are currently 543 MPs of the Lok Sabha and 245 MPs of the Rajya Sabha, besides hundreds of former MPs.

MP's Mega Gift
It is worth mentioning that the sitting MPs get several other facilities apart from their salary and allowances. This includes a constituency allowance of Rs 70000 per month, which is to be used in their constituencies. They also get Rs 60000 every month for office expenses, which includes the salary of the staff, telecommunication and stationery expenses. Apart from this, they are also eligible for 50000 units of free electricity and 4000 kilolitres of free water per year. MPs as well as their immediate family members are covered under the Central Government Health Scheme for free medical care. MPs are allowed 34 free domestic air journeys per year for themselves and their families, as well as rent-free accommodation at prime locations. Those who do not wish to take official accommodation can claim a monthly housing allowance of Rs 2 lakh.
